About this tool
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin, pulled from a passage in Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, that printers have used as placeholder text since the 1500s. This tool generates it as words, sentences, or paragraphs, with an option to start with the familiar “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” opening.
How is the text generated?
The generator draws from a vocabulary of just over a hundred words taken from the traditional passage, picking them at random and assembling them into sentences and paragraphs with a bit of natural-looking variation. Sentences run between 6 and 14 words, and paragraphs run between 3 and 6 sentences, so the output doesn’t fall into an obvious repeating rhythm. It occasionally drops in a comma partway through a sentence too, the way real prose does. None of it is meaningful Latin. It’s shuffled vocabulary meant to look like text at a glance without a reader’s eye latching onto actual words, which is the whole point of using it as a stand-in for real copy.
What’s the difference between the word, sentence, and paragraph modes?
Word mode just strings together the requested number of words with no punctuation, useful for filling a short label or button. Sentence mode builds full sentences, each capitalized and ending in a period, useful for things like card descriptions or short blurbs. Paragraph mode groups sentences into paragraphs separated by blank lines, which is the closest match for body copy in an article or a long text block. In every mode, checking the “start with Lorem ipsum” option makes the output begin with the canonical opening words instead of a random draw, which is handy when you want the placeholder to be instantly recognizable as such. You can generate up to 1,000 words, sentences, or paragraphs in one go.
Does this send anything over the network?
No, and there’s nothing to send. The text is generated entirely in your browser from a fixed word list, with no input of yours involved and no server round-trip, so there’s nothing to configure or wait on.
Use it to fill in mockups before real copy exists, test how a layout handles long or short text, or seed a CMS with dummy content. See the Wikipedia article on Lorem ipsum for the history of the passage and how it ended up as the default filler text in publishing.
